There has been a human terrible tragedy in the country Japan. At first it was an earthquake, then, one of the world’s worst tsunamis in modern day history. It even rivaled the one back in 2004. Now, the entire world is watching as a third tragedy has happened, the nuclear reactors have become damaged at the plant. Not just on reactor, but all three. As the story unfolds there now is a fourth reactor that is on fire, along with a partial meltdown on the three active reactors.
KI, The Nuke Pill
Potassium Iodide pills are being in issued in the country of Japan voluntarily along with other countries in the world. Just exactly what are they and what do they do for radiation poisoning? Here is a further explanation to make things a lot clearer.
KI is what Potassium Iodide is usually called. The scientific explanation of Potassium Iodide pills is that it starts out solid and is considered a white crystalline type of solid. It is water soluble with a taste that is strongly bitter. It has Acetone and Ethanol. Using hot Potassium Hydroxide solution is how it is prepared for the reaction of Iodine. Then, the Iodate is separated by fractional crystallization. While it is in the solution, it can dissolve Iodine to make Triiodide Ion I3, which turns the color brown.
That being said, Potassium Iodide is actually used in photography as an analytical reagent. To prevent Iodine deficiency and Goitre, table salt and Potassium Iodide is used to solve these health problems. This is why P. Bicarbonate, P. Gluconate, P. Chloride, P. Acetate are always heard of as common names we are all used to. It is an electrolyte antihypokalemics and replenishers. Even the military uses it for troops to keep from losing their electrolytes.
If a person has Hyperthyroidism, Potassium Iodine is used to treat this. Some skin conditions are also treated with this. This medicine has to be prescribed by a health professional. The FDA does have approved Potassium Iodide products for radiation poisoning. It will not protect from all types of injury or exposure.
For radiation injury, Potassium Iodide will protect the thyroid gland. The only way for this to be effective, it has to be taken within a few hours before the fact, not after the fact. Here is the reason why BEFORE is so critically important.
With radiation poisoning, Iodine is radioactive and released into the air. Then, the lungs breathe it in. Drinking water or the food supply becomes contaminated. When any of these three occur, then the body has become internally contaminated. Then, the thyroid gland actually absorbs the poison. Now, the gland becomes injured.
Taking Potassium Iodide will block the poisonous Iodine with good Iodide. It will give the Thyroid protection. It will not protect any other parts of the body. The health effects cannot be reversed once damage is done.
So, follow rules of a doctor, instructions on the bottle, and don’t take this more than fourteen days. Make sure that you are not allergic to Iodine as some people are.
